Welcome to Big Island Hawaii -
A Beautiful Place to Vacation

Hawaii (The Big Island)
The Big Island has a wide variety Hawaii activities and fabulous Hawaii Big Island dining. There are 13 climate zones on Earth and the Big Island has 11 of them! You can go from warm beaches to a snow covered mountains in about an hour! Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is also on the where you can often see molten lava flowing. There are also many waterfalls, rainforests, horse and cattle ranches, coffee farms, and much more to see!

Kona
Kona includes Kailua-Kona and surrounding areas like Holualoa, Keauhou, Captain Cook, and Kealakekua. The Kona side of the island is the home to most of the hotels and resorts on the island. Kona, Hawaii is known for being very dry and sunny, and offers amazing Big Island sportfishing. This portion of Hawaii Big Island is not, however, great for beach bums. The beaches tend to be unpleasantly rocky.

The best place for snorkeling on the Big Island is Kealakekua Bay in Kona because it is a protected marine sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to many dolphis and colorful tropical fish. On the Big Island, you can snorkel almost anywhere you can have access to the ocean. Our recommendation is to stick to places like Kealakekua Bay for clear waters and loads of fish to enjoy.

Kohala Coast (the Gold Coast)
The Kohala Coast runs from above the Kona Coast all the way to Upolu Valley (where the road ends). This is where the large, resort hotels like the Waikoloa Beach Marriott, and the Hapuna Prince Hotel. If you are a beach bum, the beaches along the Kohala Coast are some of the best in Hawaii. Be sure to check Hapuna Beach State Park. This beach has broad white sand beach with a view of Maui is perhaps the best beach on the island for ease of access and endless amount of soft, white sand.

Kau
Kau is the southern area of the island and runs from Volcano Golf Course to Manuka State Park. It is dry, hot, and sometimes windy. It includes some unique beaches like the Green Sand Beach and Punaluu Black Sand Beach. There are no hotels in Kau, but you can find great deals on vacation rentals and bed and breakfasts in the area.

South Point is small city in Kau and features ancient Hawaiian history, a sparkling, olive green sand beach, and a opportunity to feel like you are standing at the end of dry land as we know it! Sunsets can be almost unbelievable in Kau. Bring water, as there is none for miles. You can spend the day hiking the coast to the green sand beach.

Puna
Puna is a large area that covers some very wet and a few pretty dry regions of the Big Island. Puna is also the home of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. There are many small towns that offer inexpensive vacation rentals.

Try a volcano helicopter ride Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a very unique national park. You can actually drive your car around the crater of an active volcano, taste the sulfur in the air, and feel the hot steam rising from the volcano. At night, the almost eery glow of molten lava is visible through cracks in the earth. The activity of the volcano is not predictable, but it is carefully monitored. The volcano covers over 13% of the Big Island and is a must see on your Big Island Hawaii Vacation.

Hilo Hilo is the largest city on the Big Island. It has a beautiful bay, a deep-water harbor, ocean parks, and waterfalls right in town. This portion of the Big Island also has waterfalls and rainforests. Hilo has hotels nearest to the volcano, about 45 minutes away; but there are no sandy beaches on this side of the island. The beaches are usually rocky, but the water is gorgeous and good for snorkeling and kayaking.

Hamakau Coast
The Hamakua Coast starts above Akaka Falls and runs to Waipio Valley. The ocean views are breathtaking on this relaxing drive. Waipio Valley is a great destination for any traveler not afraid of heights. There are no large hotel in this area, but there are some smaller resorts and bed and breakfasts.

Kohala
Kohala includes the inland areas of the Kohala Mountain Road, Waimea and Waikoloa. This is where the Paniolos or "cowboys" rule. This is the home to the Parker Ranch, which is the largest ranch in all of Hawaii. The weather ranges from dry and hot to dry and cool at higher elevations. Waimea is another good place for Hawaii discount hotel deals in a central location where you have easy access to many Hawaii activities.
